The Human Factors Team-Atlantic City as part of the Technical Center linked simulation capability can run both ground and cockpit simulations. We can connect to cockpit simulators to conduct research on pilot performance and air-ground interactions. There are two cockpit simulators at the William J. Hughes Technical Center that we have recently used for the NEXCOM [link] program. The Reconfigurable Cockpit Simulator is a fixed-base transport aircraft simulator with a computer-generated external visual scene. It is normally configured as a Boeing 747-400 glass cockpit with a flight management system. The General Aviation Trainer (GAT) is a motion-based Cessna 421 aircraft simulator with an external visual scene and atmospheric turbulence simulation capability. We have also conducted research using a cockpit simulator at NASA-Ames, CA, for the Air-Ground Integration Experiment [link]. In these experiments, professional pilots flew in our air traffic control simulations along with our own simulation pilots flying the other aircraft in the scenarios.
