Light & Color Measurements
When designing human-machine interfaces or evaluating displays for use in different environments, it is important to consider factors such as color and brightness. Different types of displays produce colors that appear different, despite having the same RGB values. Air Traffic Control facilities have a wide range of lighting conditions. From bright sunlight in the Towers to very dim lighting in the TRACONs, each type of facility brings new requirements and considerations to HCI design. Dealing with such varied conditions requires precise measurement of color and brightness. We use a Photo Research™, Inc., PR-650 SpectraScan SpectraColorimeter to collect measurements such as luminance, illuminance, integrated and peak radiance, chromaticity, color temperature, color difference, and refresh frequency. The PR-650 is a portable, spectrally-based telephotometer/colorimeter. It is a fast scanning instrument that can perform complete photometry, colorimetric, and radiometric measurements in a fraction of a second.
