Virtual Reality Laboratory

Virtual facility model of a new layout for the supervisor's workspace in en route centers (full-size picture, 1.4 Mb).

In collaboration with the R&D Laboratories Group, we can produce virtual facility models and examine their human factors and ergonomic attributes.  For example, where in the control room can the supervisor's desk be located to provide the best sight lines of the operations floor without interfering with the aisle and motion in the room?

Virtual facility models can also be used to model Technical Operations maintenance procedures to ensure that personnel can execute the procedures easily.  For example, can a console be maintained from the rear or must the technician work from the front?

We maintain anthropometric models that can be inserted into the virtual facilities to examine issues such as reach envelopes.

Projects

  • We constructed virtual models of different layouts of new Supervisor Work Spaces for use in Air Route Traffic Control Centers, also known as en route centers.
  • STARS: We constructed VR models of the Boston TRACON to examine where new equipment could be located and if the equipment could be maintained from the rear.
  • Operations Control Centers: We constructed VR models of OCCs to examine issues such as sight lines and coordination.
  • DSR flight strip bay layout
