Communications
Updated:02:58 PM March 20, 2009
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) maintains an extensive radio system to provide air-ground analog voice communications between air traffic controllers and pilots to provide safe and efficient air travel. The system includes the individual radios used to communicate on specified frequencies, remote control communications facilities, radio communications outlet facilities, remote transmitter/receiver facilities, and backup emergency communications facilities. In addition, controllers and traffic management personnel use landlines for inter- and intrafacility communications and to coordinate with the airlines, military, and other nations. Finally, the FAA is developing digital systems to transmit and receive digitized voice, textual information (controller-pilot data link communications, or CPDLC) and status information (e.g., automatic dependent surveillance – broadcast, or ADS-B).
