Status Displays for TechOps Systems

  An AF status display

The Problem

Technical Operations (TechOps), formerly known as airway facilities, specialists are required to monitor the status of multiple different systems simultaneously.  Systems status has not been standardized, thus inconsistencies can occur in how it is coded across the different systems.  The variety of different ways that status is coded can lead to increases in training time and the potential for error commission.  TechOps is moving toward standardization to minimize these problems, with the standardization of status coding being one of the target areas.  Human factors guidance is needed to maximize the potential of success in standardizing status coding.

The Solution

Researchers examined the use of status coding in the TechOps environment, identifying problem areas and suggesting mitigation strategies.  The researchers are compiling guidance on the use of status coding for TechOps systems based on TechOps user needs.

Benefits

This study will result in a technical note that will provide information on how to standardize the display of system status in line with user needs.  Status displays are an essential component of all systems that include a human operator tasked to monitor systems operations as part of his/her job position.  A clearer and more intuitive display will support better system performance.  This enhances system safety.
